Kerala is located between north latitudes 8°18' and 12°48'
and east longitudes 74°52' and 72°22' with a total land
area of 38,863 square kilo meters bordering Arabian Sea at the west
and the Western Ghats to the east.
Geographically, Kerala can be divided into three climatically distinct
regions: (1) The Eastern Highlands (rugged and cool mountainous
terrain), (2) The Central Midlands (rolling hills), and (3) The
Western Lowlands (also called Coastal Plains).
Located at the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent and occupies
just 1.18% of India’s total land area.
Kerala is one of the 24 majors states of India formed in 1961.
